Taking Risks, Making Changes

I am the LORD the God of all mankind.
Is anything too hard for me?
                                              ~Jeremiah 32:27 (NIV)

When you were a young girl, what were your dreams? Did you long to be a ballerina or a princess? Did you desire to be a mom and raise kids of your own? Or were your thoughts of the future something different?

Some of us are blessed and we achieve our goals; other dreams never transpire. They linger in the recesses of our imaginations for years or decades.

If you want to achieve your life goals, or find purpose in life, perhaps it’s time to make some changes.

Change is hard. For many people, change can be challenging. Often, we stay stuck in complacency. It’s easier. It takes effort to start a business, begin a relationship or compose the next Grammy-winning song. It is wildly hard for some of use to lose weight or get over an addiction.

Yes, change is difficult, but not impossible when you know the Giver of Dreams, God Almighty.

Is there is a “stirring in your spirit,” a longing for change? If so, don’t give up on your dreams. They may seem dead but, like the trees in winter, they could be merely dormant.

Change, I have learned, is a process. While God can certainly transform a person’s life suddenlymost often change comes step-by-step, pound-by-pound, prayer-by-prayer. It is a series of turning points or choices, like a talk with a friend, an insight during prayer, or a phrase from a Sunday morning message. All of these simple things can lead toward movement in another direction.

For years, I was in a job that didn’t fit me or my skills. I longed for something different, but I didn’t know how to get from where I was to where I wanted to be.

Then, my company sent me to a week-long seminar at a ranch in Arizona. After a long northern winter, the warm sun and hospitality began to melt away the mantle of lifelessness so heavy on my shoulders.

In the mornings, I’d watch the sun rise over the saguaro cactus in the Sonoran Desert, and I talked at length to our instructor, who offered insight and encouraged me to pursue my dreams again. I felt God was leading me toward major life changes — like moving 1,000 miles away from a place I had lived my entire life.

While God did not reveal to me His whole plan at once, He revealed it in pieces. So in late March of 2000, I loaded up a moving van and drove to Colorado. Today I stand amazed at all the Lord has done in the past fourteen years.

Through the time of change and upheaval in my life, I learned to overcome fear. I discovered that when God asks me to jump, I can know that He will catch me with His strong and loving outstretched arms.

I learned that nothing is too hard for God. Jeremiah 32:27 says, “I am the LORD the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?”

No. Nothing is too hard for the God we serve.

Mainly, I learned more about God’s goodness and faithful heart. He keeps His promises, all of them, all the time. He transforms us by His awesome grace.

What about your dreams? Will you trust God for His sovereignty over your life?

Lord, would You reveal to me Your good purposes for my life, for this season? I ask You to empower me with the courage I need to take wise risks and make changes. Help me to trust You more. I ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.
