Signs of Spring

on March 10, 2014

I don’t know about your section of Oz, but here in Ohio we just snow-shoed our way through a rough winter. Below zero temps and layers of ice and snow made us feel trapped in our homes, longing for sun and warmth. Though I love winter, this has been too much even for me.

Still, spring will come. We can count on that. And while we lost an hour of sleep Saturday night, we gained an hour of sunlight on Sunday. (Okay, maybe not technically, but you know what I mean.)

People can complain all they want about the uselessness of Daylight Savings Time. I don’t care. I love it. Earlier nights in the winter and later days in the spring get the seasons started for me. And yesterday, spring began its journey, even if temps barely hit 40 here.

It’s so easy to doubt what we know is true, though, isn’t it? God promised in Genesis 8:22–“While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.” It doesn’t get much clearer than that.

So it is with God’s love for us. It doesn’t matter how we feel. All right, it does, but long-term, the fact that God loves you is as certain as the fact that one day soon, the earth will warm, the trees will turn shades of green, my windows will be wide open and my cat, Neal, will spend his days sitting in one, playing “I spy a bird.”

At times, I look at my life and feel like things will never change—or they’ll only change for the worse. I struggle with trusting God’s heart for me. But that doesn’t alter the truth:

For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
                                                             –Romans 8:38-39

What truths will you choose to believe today?
