It’s the start of a new year—and it’s time for some new goals. I’m not talking about New Year’s resolutions, that often fade away like melting snow. Instead, you can choose to make some heart-felt and achievable goals that can change your life in positive ways.

Empowered by God, our lives truly can be better.

Perhaps you want to lost weight, get a new job or change your outlook on life. Maybe you want to save money or serve others. Could it be that you are sick and tired of feeling “sick and tired” and it’s time for a new way of living?

Whatever you need, I hope that when we arrive at the end of 2014 we will be amazed at how our lives have changed in amazingly good ways. Are you up for it?

If so, here are six simple—but foundational—steps you can do now to make this year your best year yet. Remember, you are not alone. Not ever. The God who made you is leading and guiding you every step of the way. He is with you, and that makes all the difference.

1. Pray – What does God have for you this year? Ask Him. That’s what prayer is—talking and listening with the One who loves you most. Ask God to give you some new dreams and new visions or resurrect some goals that have been dormant.

2. Ponder – What do you really want? Sometimes we have no idea what we really want. So take some time to think and ponder. Go on a walk or light some candles and let yourself daydream with a purpose. Give yourself permission to go for it. Why? Because with God, all things really are possible! Don’t focus on what you can’t do, focus on what He CAN!

3. Plan – Then make a list of what you want to do, and from that pull out some priorities. If there are too many things on your list, you may get overwhelmed and do nothing. So be kind to yourself and focus. Use a calendar or notebook to break down your priorities into manageable goals for the year, the month, and the current week. Pray about your schedule and ask God to order your steps and direct your days.

4. Be positive – Attitude makes all the difference. As you live out your goals, you may get tired or discouraged. You may have to wait on God’s timing. Whatever comes, you will feel better and more at peace when you choose joy. Unlike happiness, joy can be present despite challenging circumstances. Choose joy and ask God to empower you.

5. Be thankful – A thankful heart is a joyful heart. There’s the joy again! Thank God daily for all He has done for you, and all He is going to do. And, thank Him for who He is—good, loving, faithful and so much more.

6. Believe that God will come through for you. Even when you do not understand, even when you cannot see the way, choose to trust God. Although, at times, it may seem as if nothing is happening, God is always at work in your life for His good purposes.

Good things are ahead! Let’s trust God together for His best for 2014.
